How It Works — Your Agreement in 4 Steps
From application to notarised agreement — typically less than a week.
What to Prepare Before You Apply
You don’t need to bring us a draft or know any legal terminology. Just have the following ready:
- Both partners’ full names and ID/passport numbers
- Your nationalities and immigration status
- How long you have been in a relationship
- Whether you are currently living together (and for how long)
- A general idea of any assets or property you want addressed
- Divorce decrees, if either partner was previously married
If you’re not sure about any of this, don’t worry — we’ll guide you through it.
The Process — Step by Step
Apply Online ± 10 minutes
Complete our secure online application form. Tell us about your relationship, your situation, and that the agreement is for a visa application.
We’ll respond within one business day with a confirmation and any follow-up questions.
We Draft Your Agreement 2–3 business days
Our attorney prepares a tailored life partnership agreement that meets the Department of Home Affairs’ requirements. This is not a template — each agreement is drafted specifically for your circumstances.
We send you the draft for review. You can request changes or ask questions before the signing appointment.
Both Partners Sign Before the Notary
Both partners must appear in person at our Pretoria office. The Notary Public will:
- Verify both partners’ identities (SA ID and passport)
- Explain the agreement in full to both parties
- Ensure both partners understand and consent to the terms
- Witness both signatures
The signing appointment typically takes 30–45 minutes.
Receive Your Notarised Agreement
After signing, the agreement is:
- Bound into the notarial protocol — the official register of notarial acts
- Assigned a unique Protocol Number
- A duplicate original is filed in our records
You leave with a notarised life partnership agreement — ready to include in your visa application pack.
What to Bring to the Signing
- South African partner: Original SA ID document (green barcoded ID book or smart ID card)
- Foreign national partner: Valid passport
- If previously married: Divorce decree or death certificate of former spouse
Common Questions About the Process
My partner is still overseas — can we do this?
Both partners must appear in person before the Notary Public. If your partner is currently outside South Africa, the signing will need to happen once they arrive. However, we can begin the drafting process in advance so the agreement is ready to sign as soon as your partner arrives. Contact us to discuss timing.
Can we sign at a different location?
The standard process requires both partners to attend our Pretoria office. If you are based far from Pretoria and cannot travel, please contact us to discuss alternatives.
How quickly can you get this done? We have a visa deadline.
We understand that visa applications have deadlines. In urgent cases, we may be able to expedite drafting. Contact us and let us know your timeline — we’ll do our best to accommodate you.
Can we make changes to the agreement after signing?
Yes. If your circumstances change, you can have an amended agreement or addendum prepared and notarised.
